Critics of industrial egg farms have alleged that some farms have inhumane treatment of laying hens and that certain facilities are dirty, overcrowded and rife with disease. The recent massive egg recall due to a salmonella outbreak has served to highlight not only the problems within some of the US egg industry but also the issues with food safety regulation as a whole (see our Food Safety category for further information).
